The World Ahead 2026
Earlier this morning, on 16 January, together with NatWest, we had the pleasure of welcoming our members to hear from Tom Standage, Deputy Editor of The Economist and Editor of The World Ahead, and Scott Livingstone, International Advisor at NatWest, as they shared their perspectives on the world ahead.
Tom gave his predictions for the World Ahead 2026 where he explored major global themes, focusing on political fragmentation, geopolitical uncertainty and economic risk. He discussed the significance of America’s 250th anniversary and upcoming US midterm elections, alongside Donald Trump’s influence on international diplomacy, alliances and trade policies, including the impact of tariffs on global growth. Tom highlighted the challenges facing Europe, as well as China’s opportunity to expand its global influence, and addressed ongoing and emerging security tensions across the Middle East, cyberspace and beyond. He also examined concerns around AI investment and climate change, noting signs of progress alongside growing uncertainty. His overarching message was that the year ahead will be shaped by instability, competing narratives and difficult trade-offs.
Scott followed suit by applying his extensive knowledge in geopolitics and raised his top difficult questions for 2026. He addressed issues surrounding Danish sovereignty and Greenland, the damage done to NATO and the implications for European security, and the consequences of a divided US political landscape, including the potential for impeachment proceedings against President Trump. Scott also explored growing interference from Washington in European politics, as well as rising tensions between China and Taiwan, highlighting the increasing complexity and volatility of the global geopolitical environment.
We extend our sincerest gratitude to our speakers for generously sharing their insights and expertise, to all of our members who attended the event and to Natwest, Martin Arnborg and team for their warm hospitality and generosity in hosting this valuable event.
