UK-EU Erasmus+ Agreement

On the 15th of April, the UK and EU finalised an agreement for the UK to rejoin the Erasmus+ programme from 2027, marking a significant step in renewing cooperation on education and youth mobility. The programme is expected to support over 100,000 UK participants in its first year alone, including students, apprentices, educators, and youth workers.

Under the agreement, the UK will regain full access to Erasmus+, enabling participation in study, training, and exchange opportunities across Europe. This includes not only university exchanges but also vocational training, school partnerships, and youth programmes. The UK will make a financial contribution to the scheme, with a built-in mechanism designed to ensure it receives value for money.

With a total EU budget of €26.2 billion for 2021–2027, Erasmus+ is one of the world’s largest mobility programmes. The UK’s return is expected to strengthen collaboration in skills development, research, and cultural exchange, while rebuilding people-to-people ties between the UK and EU in the years ahead.

Some highlights from a UK-Swedish perspective include:

  • Increased student mobility: Swedish and UK students will once again have easier access to exchanges, strengthening academic links.

  • Stronger institutional partnerships: Universities and institutions in Sweden and the UK can expand collaboration on education and research.

  • Talent and skills exchange: Greater mobility supports knowledge-sharing in key sectors, including green transition and innovation.

  • Broader opportunities for young people: Swedish participants gain renewed access to UK institutions, which remain highly attractive destinations.

  • Reinforced bilateral ties: The agreement supports closer people-to-people connections, complementing broader Sweden–UK cooperation in trade and policy.
